◆ THE CHALLENGE
Vessel monitoring beyond a single network
The project required a vessel monitoring and control system that could communicate through Wi-Fi, GSM/LTE or satellite rather than depend on a single network. Connectivity needed to follow a defined priority: Wi-Fi first, GSM/LTE when Wi-Fi was unavailable or weak, and satellite when cellular service was unavailable.
The system also needed to turn vessel sensor data into useful information and actions. Requirements included vessel tracking, geo-fencing, theft alerts, alarm management and notifications through SMS, email and calls.
Beyond the onboard device, the project required a web application accessible across devices and a separate distributor application for vessel management. Jenex’s scope therefore brought together hardware, firmware and web application development within one connected product.
OUR APPROACH
Connecting onboard engineering with web-based vessel management
Jenex’s work covered the onboard hardware, system firmware and web applications. The solution brought together network switching, sensor-based monitoring and user access through a connected vessel platform.
confidential
Custom hardware design and manufacturing
Developed the system hardware, including schematic design, PCB layout and manufacturing, to support the vessel monitoring and control product.
Embedded firmware development
Developed the firmware for the complete system, supporting the onboard functions required for vessel monitoring and control.
Wi-Fi, cellular and satellite switching
Implemented the connectivity priority from Wi-Fi to GSM/LTE and then satellite. The system moves beyond Wi-Fi when it is unavailable or the signal is poor, and uses satellite when cellular connectivity is unavailable.
Sensor-based alerts and alarm control
Supported vessel tracking and sensor-driven alerts and alarms, with notifications through SMS, email and calls, alongside the ability to turn alarms on and off.
Cross-device web application
Developed a web application for vessel sensor monitoring and control, geo-fencing, theft alerts and alarm management, accessible across devices.
Distributor vessel management application
Developed a separate web application for distributors to manage vessels, extending the product beyond its onboard monitoring functions.
◆ KEY ENGINEERING CONSIDERATION
Connectivity that follows a defined priority
The system does not depend on a single communication network. It starts with Wi-Fi, moves to GSM/LTE when Wi-Fi is unavailable or weak, and uses satellite when cellular connectivity is unavailable.
This network hierarchy is a defining feature of the project’s cloud-connected monitoring approach. It should be presented as a connectivity capability not a promise of uninterrupted coverage or guaranteed message delivery in every location.

This network hierarchy supports vessel monitoring across different connectivity conditions without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular service alone.
◆RESULTS
An integrated vessel monitoring and control platform
The project brought together custom hardware, embedded firmware and web applications for vessel monitoring and control. Its documented capabilities include vessel tracking, sensor-based alerts, alarm management and cloud connectivity through Wi-Fi, GSM/LTE or satellite.
The web application provides access to vessel monitoring functions, while the distributor application supports vessel management. Together, these components demonstrate Jenex’s engineering contribution across the onboard device and the applications used to manage it.

◆ COMMON QUESTIONS
Yacht monitoring and control: project questions
How does the system switch between Wi-Fi, cellular and satellite?
The system prioritizes Wi-Fi. When Wi-Fi is unavailable or its signal is poor, it moves to GSM/LTE. If cellular connectivity is unavailable, it uses satellite communication to connect with the cloud server.
What monitoring and control functions does the system support?
Documented functions include vessel tracking, sensor monitoring, geo-fencing, theft alerts and alarm management. The system also supports notifications through SMS, email and calls.
What did Jenex develop for this project?
Jenex’s scope included hardware schematic design, PCB layout and manufacturing, firmware for the complete system, a web application accessible across devices, and a distributor application for vessel management.
Does the solution include a mobile application?
The documented scope includes a web application that runs across devices. A separate native Android or iOS application is not identified for this project.
